Squarespace or a managed website: design polish against page depth
Squarespace produces a better-looking small site with less effort than almost anything else, and if the goal is a tasteful five-page brochure, it wins on design for the money. The mismatch with a cleaning or home service company is structural rather than aesthetic: this business is not sold by a beautiful homepage, it is sold by thirty pages that each answer one specific search from one specific town, kept current as crews and prices change. Squarespace is a design-first platform being asked to do a depth-first job.
Point 01
Design opinion is the feature, and it is a good one
Squarespace templates are opinionated on purpose: consistent type, generous spacing, restrained palettes. That opinion is why a site built by somebody with no design training still looks composed, and it is a genuinely valuable thing to buy. Plenty of small service businesses would be better off on a well-chosen Squarespace template than on a custom site built badly, and we would tell you so.
Point 02
Where a brochure platform meets a service area
The pages that bring a cleaning company enquiries are not the pretty ones. They are the specific ones: recurring residential cleaning in one named suburb, move-out cleaning with the deposit deadline in the first line, post-construction final clean written for a general contractor rather than a homeowner. There need to be a lot of them, they need to link to each other sensibly, and each needs its own structured data and its own questions. Producing and maintaining that inside a design-led page editor is slow, and slow means it does not get done.
Point 03
What gets skipped, every time
On self-managed brochure sites the same things are always missing: no page for half the towns served, no FAQ block written for the actual questions, no schema beyond whatever the platform emits by default, a cookie banner that gates nothing, and a blog with two posts from launch week. None of that is the platform's fault. It is what happens when the person responsible runs a cleaning company full time. A managed service exists precisely to make those the default rather than the intention.
Point 04
What you keep from the Squarespace way of working
The design discipline. Our sites are built as a system, one type scale, one spacing rhythm, one accent, one corner radius, so a page added in month eight looks like it belongs next to the homepage from day one. That is the same argument Squarespace makes for templates. The difference is that our system is built around your services and extended for you, rather than chosen from a gallery and then maintained by you.
Side by side
Squarespace and a managed ServiceProSites site, on twelve points
Written to be fair rather than flattering. Where a point genuinely goes the other way, it says so.
| What you are comparing | Squarespace | ServiceProSites |
|---|---|---|
| Speed and Core Web Vitals | Reasonable on a light template, heavier with galleries and blocks | Custom-coded static pages, 90+ PageSpeed guaranteed on mobile and desktop |
| SEO control | Solid basics for a small site | Architecture, canonicals, internal linking and crawl rules designed for a service area |
| Schema and JSON-LD | Some automatic; anything specific needs code injection | Generated per page type from your business data and matched to visible content |
| AEO and GEO readiness | Down to how you write, with no structural help | Answer-first sections, visible FAQ blocks, llms.txt and consistent entity naming |
| Hosting and security | Included and genuinely hands-off | Global edge hosting with SSL, CDN and DDoS protection, included and managed |
| Maintenance burden | Low technically, high in hours once the page count grows | None on your side. Send the change, we make it |
| Who does the work | You, or a designer you hire per project | Our team, continuously, inside the monthly fee |
| Content and blog | Good blogging tools; the writing is yours | Researched, cited articles published on a schedule and linked into your service pages |
| Design quality | Excellent out of the box, within the template's opinion | A design system built around your services, extended rather than rebuilt for each page |
| Accessibility and compliance pages | Basic tooling; policies and consent gating are yours to add | Privacy, terms, cookie policy with real consent gating, and a WCAG-minded build |
| Cost model | Monthly subscription plus your time plus any design help | One monthly fee, one build fee invoiced after launch, nothing itemised |
| Lock-in and ownership | Site lives in the platform; content exports, layout does not | Domain in your name, content yours, transferred free if you leave |

Being straight about it
When each one is the right choice
Choose Squarespace when
- You want a good-looking small site and design matters more to you than page count.
- You serve one town and always will.
- You enjoy running it yourself and have the evenings.
- Your work is genuinely portfolio-led and the gallery is the whole pitch.
Choose a managed site when
- Your enquiries should come from search, across several towns.
- The blog has two posts and both are from launch week.
- You want the structured data, the compliance pages and the publishing to exist without you doing them.
- A price change currently means an evening in an editor.
How to move, or how to run both
Keep the look, lose the maintenance
If you like how your current site looks, bring it. We will keep what works about it, the palette, the photography, the tone, and rebuild it into a structure that can carry thirty pages. Every existing address is mapped and permanently redirected, your site stays live until you approve the new one, and the domain moves last.

What changed for operators who moved to a managed site
Quote requests routed into dispatch
The quote form drops straight into the software our dispatchers already use, so a request does not sit in an inbox waiting for someone to notice it. We stopped losing the people who filled the form in at nine at night.

We finally have a page for every service and every town we cover instead of one page trying to say everything at once. Crew leads send a customer a direct link now rather than explaining the whole business on the phone.

Turnover pricing changes between seasons and our old site could never keep up. Now a revision request is done in days rather than whenever a developer had a free afternoon, so the site never quotes last season.

Before you decide
Questions about Squarespace
01Does Squarespace do service area pages?
You can create a page per town by hand, yes. What it does not do is generate and maintain them from one source, so every shared change is repeated on every page. That is the work that quietly stops happening once there are twenty of them.
02Will my new site look as good?
That is a fair question to hold us to. Ask for the demo and judge the designs before you commit to anything. The site is built as a design system rather than a template, so it stays consistent as pages are added.
03Can I bring my photography across?
Yes. Send your finished-job photos and they go into the galleries on the relevant service pages. There is no separate photography package to buy.
04Will I lose rankings moving off Squarespace?
Not if the move is done properly. Every address is mapped and permanently redirected to its closest equivalent before the domain switches, which is how existing visibility carries across.
05What about my Squarespace blog posts?
Anything still accurate comes across and keeps its address where possible. Anything out of date is flagged for you to decide on rather than carried over silently.
06Is this more expensive than Squarespace?
The monthly figure is higher and it is not the same purchase. Squarespace is software you operate. This is software plus design, writing, publishing, structured data, hosting and a team doing all of it.
07Can I keep my Squarespace domain?
Yes. We point it at the new site or transfer it to a registrar in your name, whichever you prefer.
08Do I get any say in the design?
Yes. The design is built around your services and your brand, and five change requests a month are included after launch, so it keeps moving with you rather than being frozen at launch.
